​Dear parishioners and friends of St Nicholas Cathedral,
I greet you all with the hope-inspiring salutation of the Paschal season: 
Christ is Risen!

There is a poster being circulated on social media advertising a BBQ and Car Convoy at the Cathedral this Sunday 7th May to commemorate Victory Day.
I’m informing you that no-one has consulted with myself or, to my knowledge, with anyone at St Nicholas Cathedral concerning the scheduling of this event, even though the Cathedral address is shown as the start venue.

For many of our parishioners in Brisbane and elsewhere Russian Victory Day is an important and solemn day of remembrance because of their relatives and forebears killed in the Great War heroically defending their Homeland. It is certainly not appropriate to “celebrate” the remembrance of this historical tragedy with a BBQ and music on consecrated Orthodox church grounds during the service of the Divine Liturgy, as the poster suggests. To any Orthodox-minded person that would be both irreligious and disrespectful - to the church community of worshipers and to those fallen whose memory deserves to be honourably revered. 

On behalf of St Nicholas Cathedral parish I extend an invitation to all those who wish to pray for and respect the memory of their heroic dead to come to the Sunday Liturgy (07/05/2023), which will begin at 8.30am, and put up a candle in remembrance and pray for the repose of their souls. Following the Divine Liturgy there will be a memorial service (Pannihida) for all Orthodox soldiers who have laid down their lives in the field of battle defending their Homeland and their fellow countrymen.

Уважаемые прихожане и друзья Свято-Николаевского собора!
Приветствую всех вас обнадеживающим приветствием пасхальных дней:
Христос воскрес!

В социальных сетях распространяется афиша, рекламирующая барбекю и автоколонну на территории собора в это воскресенье, 7 мая, в память Дня Победы.
Сообщаю, что никто не советовался ни со мной, ни, насколько мне известно, ни с кем из Свято-Николаевского собора по поводу проведения этого мероприятия, хотя адрес собора указан как место сбора.

Для многих наших прихожан в Брисбене и других местах День Победы является важным и священным днем памяти их родственников и предков, погибших в Великой Войне, героически защищая свою Родину. «Отмечать» память об этой исторической трагедии шашлыком и музыкой на освященном православном участке во время службы Божественной литургии, как предполагает плакат, конечно, неуместно. Любому православно настроенному человеку, это было бы и не-религиозно, и неуважительно - к церковным верующим и к тем павшим, память которых заслуживает достойного почитания.

От имени прихода Свято-Николаевского собора приглашаю всех желающих помолиться и чтить память своих героических павших прийти на воскресную Литургию, которая начнется в 8.30 утра, и поставить поминальную свечу и помолиться об упокоении их душ. После Божественной литургии (07/05/2023) состоится панихида по всем православным воинам, положившим жизнь свою на поле брани, защищая Родину и своих соотечественников.
